Did everyone just…. forget how to create, all of a sudden? Disney pumping out the fourth remake in a row? Movies are like 70% sequels? Stories in games being just bad if they exist at all? Haven’t had a book get hyped in like half a decade? Are we okay? What’s going on?

The hyperinflation in the value of intellectual property and the increasing costs of filmmaking and AAA gamedev in recent years made creating new things too much of an expense for most companies to consider it.

People today aren’t less creative than we were in the past. In fact, the increased accessibility of media and media-creating tools across the world and on the internet means there’re more people creating today than ever before.

But the economics of actually producing new stuff on a large scale incentivizes companies against doing anything with new ideas (with a few exceptions).

The best we can hope for is that an indie creator will hit it big and their IP become mainstream enough to compete with the established IPs (eg: Five Nights at Freddy’s)

Or established but lesser known IPs from the past will be utilized and rise in prominence (eg: Black Panther)

Or very rarely, a big company will take a risk to make something new (eg: Horizon: Zero Dawn)
